HIPAA Privacy Deadline Approaching
Large Health Plans Must Provide Reminder Notice by April 14, 2006

Brookfield, WI - March 16, 2006 HIPAA regulations require that employers with large health plans must again notify participants that a privacy notice is available. Once every three years, health plans, flexible spending account arrangements, medical reimbursement plans and health reimbursement arrangements must remind participants that their Notice of Privacy Practices is available and how a copy can be obtained.

Large health plans (defined as a plan that has over $5 million in annual receipts) were first required to issue privacy notices in 2003. The reminder notice for large plans needs to be provided by April 14, 2006. Employers may have already satisfied the reminder privacy notice requirement in some other manner such as:

 During open enrollment,
When a change occurred in their privacy practices, or
By including the information in an employee newsletter or other internal publication.

Small health plans must provide the reminder notice by April 14, 2007.
